The BIG Slide (30 Before 30 #1)

I wrote this in college in 2004 for a nonfiction writing class.

Walking into the Iowa State Fair when I was a child was always an overwhelming and exciting moment.  There were so many different smells.  My family and I always started at the animal barns, which smelled like my Grandpa’s farm, pigs and manure.  I was always careful where I stepped.  After the animal barns we would continue our journey.  As we walked into the fair a little farther the aromas of all the foods would attack our noses.  I could never decide what I wanted, corn dogs were always a good option but so was the ice cream of the future “Dippin’ Dots.”  It was all so yummy.  Right as it was time to make my final decision on the foods I wanted a sound caught my ear.  A sound like no other, screams and laughter over loud speakers, a sound that could only mean one thing, the BIG green and yellow slide.
Now this slide was like no other slide my young eyes had seen.  It was not like any slide on any playground I had ever been to.  It was HUGE!  There were about a million steps to climb up before I could even go down it and I got to ride on a potato sack to make me go fast.  There were about six big humps to fly over all while shooting down to the bottom where the grandma’s and grandpa’s stood and watched.  At night the slide was beautiful.  There were lights strung all over it, reminding me of Christmas, and big bright lights shooting all the way down the slide so the people were lit up as they flew to the bottom.
My first adventure with the incredible slide was when I was very young.  My Dad and I stood in line to get our tickets while my Mom, Brother, and Grandma inched their way toward the front of the viewing area.  Once we received our tickets we had to get our potato sacks.  I tried and tried to grab my potato sack out of the bin but it was too heavy so my Dad helped me get it out.  As I started dragging the sack up the stairs like I always did with my blanket at home I realized I was not going to make it very far.  My legs were not long enough to put one foot on one step and the next foot on the other step.  After about the first twenty slow steps a long line of people had accumulated behind us.  Realizing I was holding up the line my Dad picked me and my potato sack up and carried us to the top.  The man at the top was dressed in black and gold stripped overalls and I remember telling my Dad he looked like a Hawkeye fan.  My Dad just smiled happy his Hawkeye spirit had reached me.  The Hawkeye man laid down our sacks so that my Dad would be right behind me to hold on to me and then said, “Have a nice ride!”  As I sat down on my sack and looked to the bottom I got very nervous.  The big inviting slide from the bottom looked a lot friendlier than it did from the top.  I looked back at my Dad, and he could tell I was nervous.  He looked at me and said, “Don’t worry I won’t let go.”  We pushed off and started zooming down catching air over the humps.  I was screaming the whole way hoping my Mom and Grandma would hear me over the loud speakers.  When we got to the bottom my Mom took our picture and I couldn’t wait until the next year to ride the Big green and yellow slide again.

30 Before 30

In exactly 31 days I will be 30.
It's a fact...I'm not sure how I feel about it.
I mean I can't change it, and don't want to, but it seems like a big step.  By thirty you can't pretend to be an adult anymore, you are one.  And if you aren't you have about a day to put on your big girl panties and become one.
To try and help me figure out how I feel about turning 30 I've decided to do "30 Before 30".  30 posts, 1 everyday until 30 hits.  These posts may be memories, things I've written in the past, stories, reflections, admissions, regrets, pictures, etc.  Things that made me into who I am at 30.
By the end I hope to rediscover myself, and remind myself how precious life is.  And hopefully be calm and content about turning 30.

We start tomorrow...Enjoy!

Top 10 Bathroom Products (Part 1)

I feel like every girl always likes to know what other girls use in the bathroom, so here are my Top 10 Bathroom Products (Click on the name of the product for a link if available):

1. Avalon Organics Shampoo / Conditioner

I really like these products.  There are no bad chemicals, and my hair feels really soft and clean.  I use the scalp treatment shampoo / conditioner about 2-3 times a week and the clarifying lemon all the other days.

2. Pointy Tweezers

These come in handy all the time.  I've used them to get splinters out, to pull a tick of Rocky once, and of course to pluck the stray hairs.  I like them because the end is super small and pointy not like some tweezers that have bigger angled edges.

3. Bare Minerals Face Wash / Make-Up

All of my face wash and cosmetics are Bare Minerals except my eye make-up.  I have to have all gluten free eye make-up and I haven't found one particular product I am super fond of yet.  I use the exfoliating facial scrub twice a week and the deep cleansing foam every other day.  I use the original foundation, summer bisque concealer, mineral veil and faux tan for my base.  Then whatever blush and lip gloss I feel like wearing for the day.  All are bare minerals.  Seriously this is the best make-up ever.  If you are interested in trying out the products I advise you to go to an actual Bare Minerals store (not Ulta or Sephora) and have them help you.  They will actually teach you how to use the product, which brushes to use and help you find your right colors.  There is no pressure to buy but they will write everything down for you so if you decide you want to buy later you have exactly what you need.  Also the website is super user friendly so its easy once you know what you need to just order on there.

4. Neutrogena Pads
These are great because you can just dab around on your face or you can wipe your whole face if necessary.  You can use one pad (if just dabbing) multiple times which is nice too.  They are pretty strong, but they do work.  After washing my face with my Bare Minerals face wash I dry my face and dab any trouble spots with these and then moisturize my entire face with my Bare Minerals face moisturizer.  I usually let the dogs outside in the morning while I am waiting for the dabbing to dry then moisturize.

I learned a tip recently from a very nice Sephora employee...If you use an oil based eye make-up remover it will remove waterproof mascara quite easily and she was right.  I used to always buy the oil free eye make-up remover, but could never get all my eye make-up off.  But since changing to the oil based ones I haven't had any problems.  Again with these you can use each pad multiple times if you don't have a ton of eye make-up on.

These are the greatest.  They don't fall apart when you blow your nose or spill something, and they aren't super puffy so they don't leave white crap all over your face.  Also, they are super soft so if you are actually sick or have bad allergies like me your nose doesn't get all red.  The best part is they don't have stupid lotion on them.  I hate those lotiony kleenex.  All they do is make me get zits all over my already sore nose.  NO THANK YOU!  Buy these they are soft and lovely...your nose will thank you :)

We registered for these when we got married (5 years ago) and they are still puffy and soft and absorbent.  We love them.  I hate cheap crappy towels that fall apart after 3 washings and leave crumbs of fabric all over your nice clean body.  These do none of those things and for that I love them.  They are worth the price and you can often find them on sale at Macy's.  Tom likes the big size and I like the regular size.

I have no opposition to any other brands of flat irons, this is just what I have and like.  It heats up really well and straightens my hair which is really all it needs to do.  You might be wondering why it's on my top 10 list after that boring description, but if you no me well you know I am a night showerer.  Which means I let my hair air dry while I am sleeping, so when I wake up I never am quite sure what my hair will look like, a good straightener is necessary!

The description is in the name..."ouchless".  Really that's all that matters.  Can I rip this thing out of my hair and not have it hurt.  If so, your on my list!  These do the trick.  They hold all my hair without slipping out a million times during the day and they don't hurt to pull out.  If you come to my house or look through my purse you will probably find these all over.  I usually have one around my wrist too.

Seriously go buy one of these now!!!!  Or if you know Dr. Langwith go beg him for one (that's what Tom and I always do...Love you DAD!)  Anyways, these are awesome.  My teeth have never felt cleaner.  The best part about the one I currently have is it has different settings so if I want a super deep clean of the mouth I can set it for deep clean, if I am in a hurry I set it for brushup and if I need a regular ole cleaning I set it to normal.  When you use these toothbrushes you don't have to do anything but hold it in your mouth and move it from tooth to tooth.  It does the rest.  Don't push or your gums will hurt (trust me).  These are the best toothbrushes and you NEED one!

Ok, so there it is...my top 10 Bathroom Products (Part 1).  Part 2 will have more...I couldn't choose only 10 there are too many!  Would any of these be on your list?  What products are you keeping secret that I should know about???

I am slowly going crazy 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 switch. Crazy going slowly am I 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 switch.

Certain things are really driving me crazy lately, and guess what?!? Since you choose to read this blog you get to hear about those things.
1. The stupid tv antenna box (digital converter box)
Yes, we are poor and don't have cable.  We have those stupid digital converter boxes.  (And no I don't want to hear your sob story about how your DVR is full and you have to delete something.)  They actually work ok, but the stupid remotes drive me crazy.  When you push channel up the volume changes.  When you type numbers the channel goes down one.  We'd be better off with this...
No remote necessary!

 2. People trying too hard
As much as I love Pinterest, I have to say it is giving people fashion ideas / confidence that they otherwise would not have.  Now, I am the first to admit that I LOVE fashion and LOVE trying new things and have probably had many failed attempts at trying new fashion ideas, but if you are a jeans and cardigan type girl and all of a sudden you are trying every new fashion statement you see on Pinterest that is completely different from what you normally wear, you're trying too hard.
Just because it's on Pinterest doesn't mean its a good idea!
Keep it simple people.  There is nothing wrong with the classics.

3. Our squeaky bed
We finally broke down and bought a nice bed frame (headboard and side rails and foot board) last November.  We really like it, however it is really squeaky.  Anytime you roll over it squeaks and it is driving me crazy.
4. Dog Hair EVERYWHERE
Seriously...I could vacuum everyday all day and there would still be dog hair on the floor!
5. Spiders
Why are there spiders everywhere!  I keep killing them and vacuuming up their cobwebs and they still appear everywhere!

Ok that's all my complaining for today!

Shoulda, Coulda, Woulda. An Update on Fellowship, and a request.

Many people dream of being a popstar or some sort of celebrity. As long as I can remember I wanted to be a teacher. But today, I realized where my true talents lay...travel planning. Yep, I'm pretty sure I should have been a travel agent (do those even exist anymore? I guess if I even have to ask that question its a good thing I didn't become one, but that's besides the point).  My qualifications for being a travel agent = overly organized, lots of travel experience, know where to look for cheap flights, and thats it really, but seriously what more does it take?  Oh yeah patience (which I sort of lack) but hey 3 out of 4 isn't bad!
A portion of the spreadsheet I've made to try and find the cheapest flights.
The folders I've made for Tom to take with him with all flight and car rental info written on the outside and all paperwork inside with maps to all the places he will have to drive.
Anyway, I guess it's a good thing Tom is getting a lot of invitations for interviews, but the scheduling is really taking a toll on us.  It seems like right when we think we have some sort of schedule figured out another program calls and wants to schedule an interview on the exact day two others want interviews.  We've had to do a lot of scheduling and rescheduling.  I feel like for every two flights I've booked I've cancelled three.  Yes you read that right.
It's really been hard for Tom to get the time off from his actual job RESIDENCY (because we have to remember interviewing for fellowships isn't his actual job) but luckily his co-workers are supportive and have been willing to trade call shifts and moonlighting shifts.  I think I'm going to have to do a lot of baking for all the people that helped out, especially Tom's residency coordinator who has really changed Tom's schedule around.  I may even have to pull out the Susie Langwith trick of baking a pie to suck up :) (Love you Mom!)
Anyway to update you all on where we are with interviews...You'll remember Tom applied to 23 different fellowships.  He has currently heard back from 14 all inviting him for an interview.  He has been on two (Minnesota & Toledo) and has scheduled 7 more.  He has declined 5 interviews so far.  Remember this is the time we really weed out places.  Tom is very satisfied with the response he has gotten and I of course am very proud of him.  He deserves this so much and I just hope it all works out the way he wants.  It's really been and continues to be quite stressful.  In fact just last night he arrived home (at 11:31pm) from Toledo.  He then had to be to work this morning at 7am.  He is so exhausted already and this is just the beginning.
So, to our request...please pray for us.  Pray that we can stay focused, healthy, well rested, and sane.  Oh, and also pray that we don't have to deplete our savings for this.  Thankfully we have very supportive parents who are always willing to help out, but this is quite extreme.  We really appreciate all of your thoughts and prayers and can't wait to celebrate with you in January when we find out where the next phase of the crazy thing we call life leads us.
I'll continue to keep you all updated as the interviews go on.

Whoops

We all have them, I'm just stupid enough to share them...Things I do that I know I shouldn't:

1. Eat peanut butter straight from the jar.
2. Eat raw cookie dough
3. Sleep (in the guest room) with the laptop so I can watch Netflix til I fall asleep
4. Spend hours and hours on the internet while at work doing nothing work related
5. Hit snooze until the last possible moment every morning

But the number 1 thing I've noticed I do that I really shouldn't lately....

I wipe my hands on the dogs.  Let me explain...
If I am eating downstairs and don't have a napkin and need one I just call one of the dogs over and wipe my hands on them.  I just caught myself doing it and asked myself, "am I really to lazy to get up and get a napkin?"  The answer was, "Addie come here" wipe on the fur.  I figure Rocky can lick her and get a taste.  That's ok right?!?!?

Sneezy, Sleepy, Doc, & Grumpy

Many of you might be thinking, "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" right about now, and as much as I would like this post to be about a beautiful princess who is saved by seven cute men from her evil Stepmother, it's just not where we're going.  We're getting real here people...

If you live in or around Minnesota, or really on this planet, you know how bad allergy season has been this year.  If you live in or around me (well not in cuz that's just weird) you know about my allergy situation...it's bad people, just bad.  So lately, I've been sneezing like crazy.  My eyes water for no reason (I try to pretend I'm crying so people will at least feel bad for me), and my skin is super irritated.  Its a hot mess over here and as much as I hate to admit it, I am kinda ready for winter so everything can just die and I can go back to normal being regular allergy me.  I wonder if Snow White had allergies?  I can't imagine living in the middle of a forest in a log cabin with allergies (or at all for that matter).

I'm sure Snow White and the seven dwarfs' cabin didn't have insulation, doors, or walls. I'm so happy I do, because Tom's snoring has officially gotten out of hand.  I spent 5 of the past 7 nights in the guest room with Rocky trying to get away from the snoring (which really didn't help since Rocky snores almost as bad as Tom).  I start out in our bedroom and hope and pray that tonight will be the night he doesn't snore, but within 30 seconds (yes, it only takes Tom 30 seconds to fall asleep) its clear tonights not the night.  I unplug my phone from the charger, grab my pillow and blanket and head to the guest room.  I think the only reason Rocky comes along is because he knows he'll get to sleep in the bed, and really he's pretty smart because who wouldn't want to sleep in a bed over the floor.
This dog isn't spoiled at all!
I've tried everything to block out the snoring...turning the tv up, headphones with music, ear plugs, etc. but nothing covers up the terrible snoring sound.  It's like a loud ticking clock that never stops.  One hope I do have is that my friend Laura, who used to be a helicopter pilot for the Army, said she has some really good ear plugs I could try.  She said they covered up the sounds of F15's flying over her while she was stationed in Afghanistan.  Surely Tom's snoring isn't louder than an F15...it couldn't be could it?!?!?  Needless to say I'm a bit sleepy (which if you know me at all = grumpy), but the Doc???  He's good to go.  Maybe tonight in my dreams (which will most likely happen in the guest room) I'll become a beautiful princess who will be saved by seven men from the allergies and snoring.  Until then, I have to go because I just sneezed all over the computer and I need to desanitize before my sleepless night.
Goodnight, Sleep tight, don't let the bed bugs bite!

Top 10 Kitchen Must Haves

I've been spending a lot of time in the kitchen lately, and was thinking about how my cubbards are completely full, yet I find myself using the same items everyday.  Obviously they serve their purpose and work well.  I've listed them below and where I have a link to an item I've included it, just click the name of the item and it will link you to the website.  Enjoy!

Kuhn Rikon Herb Chopper

Really I use this thing to cut everything!  Rarely herbs.  It is great for mincing garlic cloves and onions especially.  Believe me you need this!

Pyrex 2 cup Measuring Cup

Now this, I use absolutely everyday.  Whether I'm boiling water, melting butter, or making a single serving of rice krispie treats, this is my go to item.  It is great because it is glass, and 2 cups so it is decently sized...not too big, not too small.

Pyrex Portables

Now, this I don't use everyday, but when I have to go to a potluck or a function where I have to bring food I always grab this.  It's nice because I can bake directly in the container or store the food in them and then put them in the carrier with hot/cold packs to keep the food hot or cold.  It also makes it super easy to carry when your hands are full.  Again the containers are glass which I like and have lids which I super like!
Crock Pot

I try and use my crock pot at least once a week.  It is so easy to just throw everything in before work and come home to a fully cooked meal.  Plus the house smells so yummy.  I feel bad for the dogs though having to smell it all day.  But you can be sure they get treats with their dinner!
Viva Paper Towels

These are by far the best paper towels made.  They are like cloth napkins.  They soak up everything and don't fall apart if you have to scrub something.  Yes, they are a little more expensive than Bounty or the Target brand, but trust me, these are the BEST!

Dial Anti-Bacterial Hand Soap

I really like this handsoap for the kitchen.  It gets all the chicken slime off my hands and makes them actaully feel clean.

Pampered Chef pots & pans

I LOVE my Pampered Chef pots & pans.  Thanks to my Uncle Kevin (yourpamperedchef@cox.net) for giving me an entire set one year for Christmas!  I've had the same set since college and they are still in great shape.

Spatula

Now a regular old spatula may seem boring, but I'm telling you this is the greatest spatula of all time.  I seriously bought it at Kroger Grocery Store in Virginia and have been looking for another one for years.  The nice thing about it is it's a great size not too big, not too small.  But the best part is the metal handle.  It doesn't bend when you try and cut something with it while cooking.  It is super sturdy and clearly has been well loved.

Wooden Cutting Board

My cousin Annie is married to an awesome guy named Adam, who is an amazing woodworker.  His specialty is custom doors and cabnets, but he often makes things for us for gifts.  The best gift are his famous cutting boards.  Not only are they gorgeous, but they last forever.  They are super easy to clean, and can also be used as a platter.  Just recently my cousin Sarah (Annie's younger sister) got married and Adam made small cutting boards with a monogram in each one for all of the wedding guests.  Everyone was talking about how wonderfully beautiful they were.  You definately need to check out his website!

Measuring Conversion Magnets

Last but not least are my trusty Measuring Conversion Magnets.  I have one for dry goods as well.  They are super helpful (especially when you are challenged in math like I am) when your trying to cut a recipe in half or can't find your 1/3 cup and need to know how many Tablespoons it would be instead.

Well there you have it!  My top 10 kitchen must haves.  What are some of your top must haves???

Just Sayin' Saturday

I hate when it is raining outside and people are watering their yard...Just sayin'

Is complaining about people who complain complaining? If it is I'm complaining today.

Everyone does it at some point or another...complain.  But lets be realistic the shit we are complaining about really doesn't even matter in the big scheme of things.  I read a quote recently: "If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else's, we'd grab ours back."  This really hit home for me when my most serious problem the other day was that I couldn't go get a pedicure because I had already committed to dog sitting.  I mean really if I threw that problem in a pile people would laugh at me and probably try and steal it.
So today, when my co-worker came back from a 6 day vacation complaining that it was so hot, and she didn't pack the right stuff, and they didn't stop on the drive enough I wanted to say..."Seriously, you just went on vacation for 6 days and you are coming back complaining?!?!"  In this economy people are lucky if they have a job, let alone a job with vacation days, plus the money to actually go on vacation.  We should be so happy with what we have because so many people out there are happy with much less than we have.
When my pedicure was delayed one day I reminded myself that there are people in the world who don't have clean water to drink so I shouldn't complain that my feet didn't get to soak in clean water.  Let's all try to be a little more mindful about what we deem appropriate to complain about, because honestly who likes to listen to someone complain about a 6 day vacation???

DO NOT WEAR WHITE AFTER LABOR DAY...this is your warning!

Today I decided to throw caution to the wind and wear white after Labor Day...GASP...I know!  I figured it was super nice out and it might be the last chance to wear my white capris to work this year.  I confidently put on my white thong (because of course the white capris are a bit see-through) and capris and headed off to work.  Mid-morning I went to the restroom and as I sat I looked at the thong and realized it had broken!  Yes broken!  I tried to figure out what I could do because I clearly could not go comando with the see-through white capris at work (which is a church Lord help us all)!  My first attempt was to try and tie them back together which worked about as well as me riding my bike to work (a whole other story).  My second attempt was to try and find a safety pin and pin them back together, but the broken part was in a very sensitive area (see diagram below).
So the pinning was out.  I quickly concluded that I must try and place the pieces back where they belong and walk very carefully so as not to loosen them.  By the time I made it back to my desk I had two flapping thong pieces and a view for all to see.
Luckily my lunch was coming so I could go home to change.  When I got home I was sad because this was a new thong and I really didn't want to just throw it out.  Then my Susie homemaker skills set in and I decided I could sew it back together.  I got out my little travel sewing kit from my college survival kit that I still have 7 years later (thank you Aunt Sandy) and began threading my needle.  I stiched and I stiched until I was certain it wouldn't come apart again.  Threw my white capris back on and confidently headed back to work!
The lesson in all of this is...DO NOT WEAR WHITE AFTER LABOR DAY!  It is not a suggestion or a fashion disaster, it is real, honest to goodness advice because if you do, no matter how confident you are, something will go wrong.

Every Summer Has Its Memories...

It's a sad day when I realize summer is over :(  Although it still feels like summer outside, I hear the school bus in the morning, and see the sun setting slightly earlier each day.  Below are our summer memories...

I took my nephew to the Children's Museum then we had a sleep over...when we dropped him off the next day his Mom asked if he got a little spoiled and his response was, "no mom, I got a lot spoiled!"  LOVE <3

We Grilled A LOT!

We worked on Tom's applications!

We went to Sheboygan, Wisconsin for the 4th of July and Tom and my Dad were in heaven with all the fireworks they could buy and shoot off!  We had our own amazing show right on the beach.

We went fishing and caught all these fish within 4.5 hours (our limit).

Yes, I caught the biggest fish because I am an amazing fish slayer :)

We visited my parents in Des Moines...clearly the dogs love it there!

We enjoyed the beauty of the great outdoors

Nightfall in our backyard

We watched the storms roll in

We went for our yearly all day summer bike ride (thank God it's not a pedal bike ride!).  We rode all around Minnesota.

We rode to Schell Brewery but were turned away from getting any beer.  Clearly they saw Tom and were worried he might drink it all!

We took lots of naps!
And let the dogs give us some love :)

I was fortunate enough to get to go to Yosemite National Park in California for my cousin Sarah's wedding and got to see all my family!  It was amazing (although I was sick the entire time :( boo)

My Dad and the beautiful bride (my cousin Sarah)

Sarah and me!

Beautiful Yosemite Park

We took another bike trip (overnight this time) with some dear friends to Lanesboro, MN.  This is when we were a bit lost and no one's cell phone or GPS would work.

The campsite

A great picture I got while driving (I wasn't driving) to Lanesboro.

I took my little friend Cortez to the MN state fair and he had a BLAST (although I don't think he ever saw the animals he just rode rides and played games...totally my fault).

He got his face painted like Spiderman!

We had some beautiful flowers pop this summer in our backyard

I was able to grow some vegetables!

Yummy!

I helped a friend out who does Foster Care and took care of these sweeties!

Love <3

We were lucky enough to score some free tickets to the Vikings game (and they actually WON!)

And were so happy to celebrate the marriage of our dear friends Kim & Eric.

What wonderful memories...I hope you had a wonderful summer with many memories to keep forever!
